Wine-O's Unite! Raise your glass.. Is Wine Good for You?

Thanks to its alcohol content and non-alcoholic phytochemicals (natural occurring plant compounds), wine has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

However, the amount of wine you drink matters tremendously. Drink more than what’s recommended, your health benefits are lost and your health risks go up.

Here’s what’s considered safe and effective:

Men: No more than two drinks per day.

Women: No more than one drink per day.

One drink is defined as a 5-ounce glass of red or white wine, 12 ounces of regular beer (1 bottle) or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.

The health benefits of wine
When it comes to wine’s health capabilities, here’s what we know:

It’s been well documented that moderate amounts of alcohol can raise your good cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and thin your blood. This is thought to be one of the primary cardiovascular benefits from wine (red and white), as well as hard liquor and beer.

Non-alcoholic phytochemicals in wine, such as flavanoids and resveratrol, act as antioxidants and prevent molecules known as “free radicals” from causing cellular damage in the body.

The negative side of wine
Wine, however, is not for everyone. Certain medical conditions are worsened by the consumption of wine, so it’s vital you seek the advice of your personal physician. Here’s a few things to know:

High Triglycerides: One downside to wine consumption is that it can elevate triglyceride levels, which is associated with health problems such as diabetes. Those who already have high triglycerides should, therefore, avoid or dramatically limit their wine (and alcohol) consumption.

Breast Cancer Risk: Studies have shown alcohol can increase estrogen levels and raise tumor progression in women with (or at high risk for) estrogen positive breast cancer.

Migraines: Wine is often a big trigger for people who suffer with migraine headaches. Although white wine contains more sulfites than red wine (sulfites are added to white wine to preserve its light color), red wine seems to be a much bigger migraine trigger. That’s probably due to the accumulation of histamines and tannins from prolonged contact with the skin.

Weight Gain: People who drink alcohol also consume empty calories, calories that lack nutrients and can lead to weight gain.

Five ounces white or red wine = approximately 120 calories. Drink a bottle of wine (4 glasses), and you’ll be consuming about 480 calories (that’s the equivalent of two 20-ounce Cokes!).
Here’s how alcohol compares to carbohydrate/protein/fat:
1 gram carb = 4 calories
1 gram protein = 4 calories
1 gram fat = 9 calories
1 gram alcohol = 7 calories

Henna...Indigo...BC!

These are the supplies, I ordered from the links below... The small packages are samples that were like a $1 buck each...Its great to order the samples so you can see how your hair responds to the treatment before buying in bulk...Henna is all NATURAL. =)

Don't be creeped out by the website, the images are kinda spooky but its all good. Ive always had a pleasant experience purchasing from them...They even except Paypal which is awesome.

I mixed 2 boxes of Henna, Honey, EVOO, conditioner, scented oil, and lavender for fragrance (not pictured)

It looked really gookey...the smell wasn't as overwhelming as I imagined...

Coated each strand with the mixture, from root to tip...

BEFORE::: Over processed, split ends, damaged hair.... My hair is relaxed in these photos. (pics taken approx. 3 years ago)

After Henna treatment, I clipped my ends....

I was very pleased with the results. My hair was soft, bouncy, and full of luster. One downside of the henna was that my hair was extremely thirsty afterwards. Nothing major, just had to generously oil my scalp.

A few months after the Henna I put a Cherry Cola rinse on my hair. I posted this pic to show that you can color your hair after using henna,...

The pic was taken after using Indigo...It turns your hair like a blue-black hue. Its 100% natural as well, just add water and apply!!

This pic is a request from a follower of the blog, she wanted to see how my hair looked after the BC!! This is for you girl!!! This is a month or so after cutting my hair..around 8/2008... Rockin' the Florida Evans fro!!! LOL

First attempt::: Straightening my Hair since the BC!!!

Deep Conditioned/Hot Oil Treatment..

Detangled and Air-Dryed

After I pressed my hair I braided two semi-loose plaits on each side.. I used satin covered sponge rollers to curl the ends..

Straightened my hair on low-heat... I was going to press my hair from the heat of the stove but chickened-out, I pressed my hair with a plug-in pressing comb on Med/Low.

After my hot shower my hair shrunk and I lost some of the sheen/silky look...

Day 2

Day 3 I'm channeling my inner 1980's chick...mushroom hairstyle!! LOL! It started as a joke, DH loved it so I wore it out like this. Groovy Dude.
========
I enjoyed the "straight" look for the 3-4 days it lasted. LOL! My hair is a 4b so it takes more heat or a higher temp to get the pressed look I was going for. My hair can be resistant to heat but it was very soft and VERY manageable. I will proceed with more confidence next time. I had no idea how to straighten my natural hair because my hair has been permed my whole life. I didn't want to burn my hair off so I was super cautious this time with how much heat I put on my hair. After recently washing my hair my naps are back in full effect!! LOL! Does anyone recommend a flat iron that gets really hot with no damage? I love having options with my hair...I welcome all suggestions..

Worlds of Curls...

Having fun with my hair!!! #naturalhair (pics taken Jan 2011)

OMG...My skin was so soft and moisturized, not to mention I smelled like a big ole' Tootsie Roll. The scent is DREAMY!! The brown sugar crystals exfoliate and with this WINTER weather, my skin needed some TLC. Shout out to my cuzzo for such a great gift. I love it!! Thank you again!!

Cara B Naturally is for ME!!

I won! I won!! A few months ago I won a box of Cara B products from Candice, founder of Simplistic Chic , I was so geeked because I never win anything from the 50-11 giveaways that I enter..So to find out that I won was awesome!!

As you can see my daughter's hair is very thick, kinky and it is very tangled in this pic. Usually I try to refrain from allowing her to wear her hair down for extended periods of time. It is a nightmare to comb her hair when its tangled for she and I.

After taking all of the hair accessories out her hair I bathed her with the Baby Bar Soap Bundle. It was very mild, I loved how the scent wasn't overwhelming. The smell was sweet yet subtle, the soap lathered up rather quickly. I felt comfortable allowing her to bathe herself with the bar soap unlike other brands that can be too strong. After she was nice and clean I wet her hair and lathered in the Shampoo / Body Wash. This shampoo/wash lathered up quickly and had a silky feel to it. It felt like it was lotion in the shampoo because her hair and skin felt so soft. A small amount of lather got in her eyes and she did not flinch. That is so comforting for a parent who has a small child, tear free natural products are always a plus!! My daughter has a very mild case of excema and the Cara B products didn't iritate her skin like some "natural" products have done in the past. The shampoo doubles as a body wash and I have even used it as a bubble bath.

After rinsing all of the shampoo out her hair I added the Leave-In Conditioner / Daily Moisturizer which instantly moisturized. The sweet almond smell was so yummy!! Her hair started waving up...it had a 'wash-n-g0' look to it...I could have put on a head band and sent her on her way. It was so cute and SOFT!! The awesome thing for a parent with a child who hates to have their hair washed is that the conditioner was a leave-in. YAY!! We didn't have to rinse the conditioner out! YES!!!

Since my daughter has sensitive skin I only use 100% unrefined raw shea butter because of her excema...I took a small chunk of shea butter and squeezed some Body Lotion and mixed it together. It worked like a charm!! It mixed very well and gave the boring shea butter smell a kick of yummy goodness!! The almond and jojoba oil was so sweet...we were kissing all over her because she smelled so good. After she was dressed I combed her hair with the Moisturizing Hair Mist which is awesome as a detangler. The usual chore of combing her hair is so much easier with the Cara B products.

The whole family has used these products. The Moisturizing Hair Mist with shea butter is what I use when I twist my hair. I love that these products aren't greasy and sticky!

Where have these products been my whole life!!!???? Thank you Simplistic Chic and thank you Cara B Naturally!!!
