Craft project::Aquariums in a bottle!

This craft project was a huge hit with my students! Its so hands on and it incorporates measurement, and a science lesson on marine biology. (I omitted the glitter) I got this idea from kaboose.com
Here’s a science project that is also a fun craft. Create your very own ocean waves in a plastic soda bottle. A perfect summer craft.

For more great warm-weather activities, check out our listing of Summer Crafts.

What you'll need:
Empty two liter plastic bottle with lid
Clear vegetable oil or mineral oil
Water
Funnel
Blue food coloring
Small star fish, shells and other sea creatures
One tsp glitter
White craft glue
Hot glue

How to make it:
Wash and dry bottle and remove all labels.
Fill bottle halfway with tap water.
Add a few drops of blue food coloring and swirl around to mix.
Add glitter and sea creatures.
Using a funnel, fill the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil.
Be sure that rim and cap are dry, then apply white craft glue around the rim. Seal cap.
Use a layer of hot glue around the outer edge of the cap for added protection from leakage.
Turn bottle on its side and gently rock the bottle to create a “wave” inside your ocean habitat!

Tips:

Use lightweight starfish, shells and other sea creature toys that can float. Test them first in a bowl or glass of water. Find these at your local craft supply store or discount department store.
Make the ocean any color you choose! Blue is standard of course, but if your child’s room is decorated with red and yellow, go with red food coloring. There’s no rule that says your ocean must be blue.

Small children will be mesmerized by this creation. They can help make this every step. Let them insert the sea creatures, hold the funnel and help add the tap water. In the steps that may be more difficult for little fingers, have them hold the bottle steady for you while you add the glitter.

Paper or Plastic?

Plastic did not exist in the ocean half a century ago. Our grandparents lived just fine with glass, metal, paper and wood to package and transport everything we touched. But again, the issue is not that we choose paper over plastic. The choice is about living responsibly within the means of what can be sustained environmentally and economically. In the big picture it is about creating systems of government, commerce and community development that will sustain a healthy economy, environment and quality of life for all people far into the future. 120 billion pounds of plastic produced annually with limited to no post-consumer use is not sustainable. It is not a morally acceptable burden to place on the next generation. Paper or Plastic? Bring your own bag.

PRODUCT REVIEW::: Nubian Heritage

Humble Beginnings

In 1992, two New York street vendors embarked on a personal mission to produce high quality bath body products, utilizing natural ingredients and traditional African recipes. Nubian Heritage is the brainchild of these lifelong friends who grew frustrated with the inferior quality, high chemical content and exorbitant prices of products manufactured for people of African descent. More than ten years later, most of their products are no longer made in bath tubs or kitchen sinks, but the Nubian Heritage philosophy remains the same; produce the best products imaginable for our people, our family.

100% Black Owned and Proud of It!

For generations, Lemongrass, with its strong and sweet lemony aroma, has been used in the purification rituals, as well as, to promote psychic awareness. Steam-distilled lemongrass has a strong history of medicinal use in the West Indies, Africa and South America. Tea Tree oil's remarkable anti-bacterial and healing properties, long used to alleviate skin problems, are a perfect complement to the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of Lemongrass.

Nubian Heritage uses Madagascan Lemongrass oil and Aboriginal Tea Tree oil in a moisturizing Shea Butter Soap to help clear oily troubled skin. This refreshing deodorant soap, with its mild anti-septic and rich moisturizing properties, treats and tones skin. In addition to their topical healing properties, these exotic essential oils are also revered for their outstanding aromatherapy values.

Natural ingredients...with the exception of a few words that I can't pronounce. When selecting things that I consume or apply on my body I check for harmful chemicals like Parabens and DMDM.

Honestly, this stick was wiggidty wack! It wouldn't melt...I didn't enjoy the shea butter stick at all!

I love this shampoo/conditioner and its perfect for the entire family!

Boat made of plastic bottles to make ocean voyage CNN

By Brandon Griggs and Jeff King CNN

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- Imagine collecting thousands of empty plastic bottles, lashing them together to make a boat and sailing the thing from California to Australia, a journey of 11,000 miles (17,700 km) through treacherous seas.

This 60-foot sailboat, the Plastiki, is being built from more than 12,000 recycled plastic bottles.

You'd have to be crazy, or trying to make a point. David de Rothschild is trying to make a point.
De Rothschild hopes his one-of-a-kind vessel, now being built on a San Francisco pier, will boost recycling of plastic bottles, which he says are a symbol of global waste. Except for the masts, which are metal, everything on the 60-foot catamaran is made from recycled plastic.

"It's all sail power," he said. "The idea is to put no kind of pollution back into the atmosphere, or into our oceans for that matter, so everything on the boat will be composted. Everything will be recycled. Even the vessel is going to end up being recycled when we finish."

De Rothschild's vessel, scheduled to set sail from San Francisco in April, is called the Plastiki. Its name is an homage of sorts to Thor Heyerdahl, the fabled Norwegian explorer who in 1947 sailed 4,300 miles across the Pacific on the Kon-Tiki, a raft made from balsa wood.

De Rothschild is something of an adventurer himself. The scion of a wealthy British banking family, he is one of only several dozen people to traverse both the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps. In 2005 he founded Adventure Ecology, an organization that uses field expeditions to call attention to environmental issues. Watch how the boat is constructed »

Vintage Gucci..what more can I say?

I won both of these beauties on Ebay. I'm not sure what decade they are from but I finally found a place that will put new lenses in these Gucci vintage frames for me. The frames above I am getting a slight rose tint...They will be prescription shades...

I'm not sure if these will be shades or prescription glasses...
It was a bid war but I'm glad I won!!
